First Snowflakes of The Season

Winnipeg and much of the RRV and southeastern Manitoba saw its first snowflakes of the season early this morning as a clipper system pushed into southern Manitoba. This is 11 days later than the 1981-2010 normal first snowflake of the season of October 9.

Southwestern Manitoba got the brunt of this system, which brought the first accumulative snowfall to many, including Dauphin and Brandon.

Some flurries will again be possible in the RRV and southeastern Manitoba tonight. Best chance for accumulation will be east of Winnipeg, including areas around Pine Falls, Pinawa, Sprague and the Whiteshell. 1-3 cm is expected in these areas.

Cold conditions are expected to continue for the foreseeable future, with daytime highs only reaching the low to mid single digits all week this week.

  1. JJC,
I noticed today that models indicate snow at the end of this week (5-10 CM) and late weekend (5-15 CM). What is you take on the system?

    Thank-you,
    Walter

    1. Will get back to you this afternoon on that question. Have not been able to access my internet since yesterday due to computer problems again.

  2. Reports of 5-10 cm of snowfall under those lake-effect snowsqualls west and northeast of Winnipeg last night through to this morning. Pinawa has received nearly 10 cm according to a cocorahs observer.

Looks like there will be several weak clipper systems moving into Manitoba in the northwest flow for the next several days, each will bring a chance for precipitation. One will skirt over extreme southwestern Manitoba tomorrow night with a chance for flurries. The one you referred to for Friday looks to remain to our north, so we should be fine in Winnipeg, other than the odd few scattered flurries.

The one on Sunday-Monday will be the one to watch based on what models show right now. So far, it looks like the bulk will push to our south, but areas along the US border could get some accumulation.

So as a summary, based on how things look right now, it looks like most of the accumulative snowfall will miss Winnipeg over the next week... but that could change.

  4. Eastern parts of the city could get into a bit of lake-effect flurry activity tonight. Little to no accumulation expected.

  5. Snow squall warnings issued west and east of Winnipeg.. First time I have seen Environment Canada issue these types of warnings in Manitoba! Good news that they decided to start issuing them because snow squalls is an event of its own.

  6. Reports of 20-30 cm in the Gimli area yesterday through to today thanks to snow squalls off Lake Winnipeg. Additional 10+ cm likely under snowsqualls again tonight and tomorrow off both Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg.

  7. My oh my did it ever get cold at the airport this morning thanks to some patches of clear sky overnight and this morning. -9°C so far this morning. It is close to the old record low of -12.2°C in 1887.

Did not get that cold inside the city:

    South St Vital (me) -6.1°C
Charleswood -6.1°C (as of 8:05 am)
    Whyte Ridge -5.3°C

Just goes to show how much a few patches of clear skies can bust an overnight low forecast by several degrees.

  8. Looks like a potential return to a more normal or slightly above normal regime after Nov 4th or so as big western ridge off the coast breaks down and NAO goes positive.

    1. Hopefully that happens but the farmers almanac didn't say that so you are wrong. The farmers almanack has been right for the last 10 years. The "models" that you look at are made a machine and are a load of shit.

  9. Looks like the bulk of the snowfall in the next few days will be missing Winnipeg thankfully. A clipper system will push to our north and east today and tonight. We may see some flurries or showers this afternoon and evening in Winnipeg, but I don't think we'll see much. Winds will turn northwesterly this afternoon, meaning another push of cold air behind the system. As a result, there may be some lake-effect flurries again tonight off the lakes, especially Lake Winnipeg.

Enjoy today's ''warmth'' however, with a high of 8 or 9°C in Winnipeg today.

Another clipper system to our southwest on Sunday may bring some flurries or showers to our region, but not much is expected once again as the bulk remains to our south and west.

Much colder air will settle in behind Sunday's clipper. This is why you should enjoy today! Highs may struggle to exceed the freezing mark to start next week.

  10. Mother Nature gave us a little more than what was asked for today with highs reaching near 12°C in parts of Winnipeg. 11.7°C here in St Vital and 11.9°C in Charleswood with some 12°C highs recorded in some areas so far today. Highs of 13-14°C southwest of the city.

  11. Hopefully you enjoyed the nice temperatures! Precipitation has moved in associated with that clipper system to the north. Precipitation should stay as rain for most of the evening when precipitation is occurring, with a greater chance for snow mixing in late evening.

  12. In the 1981-2010 normals, today is the last day of the year with a normal high in the double digits with a normal high of 10°C. It all goes downhill from here pretty quickly though! Normal high drops below zero by November 17.

  13. JJ, do you think I'll be OK in just a hoodie Tomorrow night around 11:00 when I drive back from Tim Hus concert?

    1. It may be a little chilly depending on how well that hoodie keeps you warm. Temperature around that time is expected to be below zero in the -2 to -5°C range along with a light northerly breeze.

  14. Nasty wind out there today with temperatures falling below freezing..

At least we don't have to deal with the snow they're getting in Alberta!

  15. I bet we'lle have cold winter, its the only thing that ever happens in these parts and I will never expect it change but I do hope we get warm weather but we never do so the hell with it.

  16. Coldest night since April here in south St Vital with a low -7.8°C this morning.

Might not even reach the freezing mark today! A bit warmer by Wednesday, reaching the mid single digits. Still no major systems set to hit us in the next week continuing this dull weather pattern.

  17. Its been an immense month, at the beginning it was reasonably warm, the middle was normal and the rest was very cold and wintery.

  18. Very cold night in store tonight. I would not be surprised to see temperatures drop around -11 to -13°C tonight at the airport. Not record breaking, but almost 10°C below normal.

  19. Didn't get quite that cold at the airport. South end was much cooler with a low of -11.7°C at my place so far and -12.4°C at another station.
