Enjoy the Mild Conditions While They Last...

A very mild start to the day today in Winnipeg... Temperatures rose to +2°C overnight with a high of 2.1°C here in South St Vital and also at the airport. There was even a bit of rain around 5 am. Unfortunately, a brisk northwest wind this morning will usher in some colder air, dropping temperatures to the mid minus single digits for the afternoon. Winds will calm somewhat this afternoon.

Another mild one tomorrow with temperatures above zero. Unfortunately, it does look a little cloudier than we would like. There may be a few breaks in the cloud at times though.

Unfortunately, the weather pattern takes a turn beginning Wednesday. Northerly winds will gradually bring some colder air back into the region. There will also be a chance of some snow throughout the day, but I'm not expecting major accumulations if we do get snow.

Temperatures really take a plunge beginning on Thursday. Some models do hint at a brief warmup on the weekend, but below normal temperatures should be dominant through to next week. Some -30°C lows cannot be ruled out on the coldest nights.

  1. An incredible 20.0°C at the Lethbridge CDA station yesterday:

I am not sure if this is the first ever 20°C in January in Canada... that's something I'd have to look into later this year if I have time. Some locations have come close to 20°C in January before, but I have not yet found any 20's. For example, Cypress Hills, Saskatchewan, did reach 19.0°C in 2003.

    1. I have just discovered that Lethbridge was not the first 20°C in January in Canada on record. Some parts of southern Ontario have reached 20°C in January before. Niagara Falls for instance reached 20°C twice in January 1950 with a maximum of 22.2°C on the 26th.

  2. Looks like our slightly milder day will be Friday, but likely only closer to or slightly above normal. The first week of February looks awfully frigid at this point with multiple lows in the -30's possible... then the cold might let up mid month.

Also, some snow tomorrow with possibly 1-3 cm. Hopefully the streak of storms missing us continues.

    1. Freezing drizzle the main concern for today... Might be a bit of snow later in the day, but not expecting any accumulations. I'm sure liking this lack of snow... the prospects of a much earlier spring than in 2013 and 2014 keep looking better.

  3. By the way, calling snow depth as only about 9-10 cm here in South St Vital right now. Patches of 5 cm or less in open spots between drifts. Drift max in yard 25 cm... Quite similar to a 6 cm snow depth and 21 cm drift max I recorded at this time in 2012.

  4. JJ, you're itching for that 2012 early spring this year. I am too. It would be nice.

    1. Even a normal start to spring (last week of March or first week of April) would be exciting this year.

  5. Weak clipper again tomorrow but not expecting much snow again thankfully... The clipper will usher in some milder air so we will reach slightly above normal.

Dreadfully cold beginning this weekend and lasting through most of next week. There are signs of moderating late in the week next week, especially by the weekend.

  6. Snow will taper off a bit this morning before another brief wave of snow midday. Could finish with around 2 cm for today, so certainly nothing major. Frigid weekend on the way... Best chance to get to -30°C will be Sunday morning. Signs of warming late week into next weekend continue in today's model runs.

    1. Snow missing us just to the northeast this afternoon... So looks like we'll finish this system with just about 1 cm in Winnipeg.
