Incredible Cold For Early December

Winnipeg just missed a -30°C low this morning with a low of -29.3°C at the airport. Brandon just missed -30°C as well with a low of -29.8°C. A few places did reach -30°C including Roblin (-31.4°C), Sprague (-31.3°C), Pilot Mound (-30.7°C), Emerson (-30.6°C), Wasagaming (-30.5°C) and Melita (-30.1°C).

These values were not so bad however when you compare to Saskatchewan and Alberta. Temperatures dipped to the -40's and wind chills into the -50's. Here's some of the -40°C lows this morning:

Val Marie, SK

Sundre, AB

Most if not all of these broke records, however it is of note that a lot of these communities don't have a long period of records. What is incredible is that these lows are at least 25 degrees colder than normal.

     As a comparison, Winnipeg's earliest -40°C reading was on December 20, 1879 at -40.6°C.

-30°C lows are likely in southern Manitoba again tonight and probably more widespread than this morning. Winnipeg airport will have a shot at the first -30°C since February. However, a southerly wind from the city may keep the airport a little milder so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Frigid conditions will continue for the entire week next week, with highs struggling to exceed -20°C.

  1. JJ, do you think -35 is possible tonight?

    1. I wouldn't think so, mainly because we will actually be in a bit of a southern flow tonight. -30 is definitely possible though.

    2. I think -35°C is a stretch for tonight, but possible on a localized basis with the best potential in southwestern Manitoba and along the US border. I'm thinking more -30 to -33°C.
I think the airport will remain a little warmer tonight due to a south wind off the city, but it may still reach -30°C (I mean it doesn't have very far to go). We'll have to wait and see how much of an effect the south wind actually has; what could even happen is the airport bottoms out in the evening and warms a bit or stabilizes overnight... we'll see.

  2. That southerly wind's doing it's think so far, really not allowing temperatures to drop much at all. Wonder if we'll manage escaping -30°C again...

  3. Much of southern Manitoba escaped -30's again, with -30's mainly along the US border in southwestern Manitoba.

There will be another chance tonight and this time winds will switch to the northwest and we get a bit of a reinforcement of colder air, which might give us a better chance, especially if skies remain clear. Best chance will again be in southwestern Manitoba.

  4. Winnipeg and Brandon escaped -30 again this morning with lows of -28.7 and -29.9 respectively. One has to wonder if we will ever hit -30 in this cold spell! Still a chance tonight and again tomorrow night.
