Rainfall Amounts From Yesterday

Thunderstorms to the west, north and south of Winnipeg yesterday morning dumped copious amounts of rainfall, which would have been nice to have here in Winnipeg too! Here's some rainfall totals via Cocorahs and Environment Canada:

Carberry ................ 49.2 mm
Winnipeg Beach .... 48.3 mm
Green Ridge .......... 30.7 mm (near Dominion City)
Steinbach .............. 25.7 mm
Sundown ............... 23.4 mm
Neepawa ............... 21.6 mm
Emerson ............... 11-17 mm
Gimli ...................... 16.0 mm
Brandon ................. 13.4 mm

Only 1.0 mm fell here in south St Vital bringing my monthly total to a measly 23.7 mm so far.

There will be the risk for thunderstorms across southern Manitoba later today, first in western areas this afternoon then pushing east this evening, reaching the RRV by evening. Severe storms will be possible with all modes of severe weather possible.

There will be a secondary risk for storms tomorrow associated with the cold front. An isolated severe storm is possible with this again.

Unfortunately we did not reach 30°C yesterday, which ends our 30°C streak at 5 days and our heat wave (days of 32°C +) at 4 days long. This is the longest 30°C streak and heat wave since July 2011 and longest in August since 2003.

Things will be cooling down behind the cold front tomorrow. We will struggle to exceed 20°C on Sunday. Thankfully this will be shortlived as we get back into a warm flow of air starting Monday, bringing back summer. We very well could see another 30°C day or two next week.

  1. EC's forecast is, "A mix of sun and cloud. Risk of a thunderstorm late this afternoon. High 27. UV index 6 or high". At 12:00 it's already 28! Thats shows how automated it is .

    1. I personally think they would be willing to use a site like spot wx because the graphs are so easy to read.

    2. I agree with you frank.

  2. Could be an interesting evening in southern Manitoba tonight when it comes to thunderstorm activity. HRRR weather model looks interesting, bringing in a line of storms right through the RRV by around 10 pm. Severe weather will be possible.. I am considering extending the slight risk of severe storms further east later.

  3. That's quite the storm south of Melita at the moment.. likely producing very large hail at this time. Flooding from the heavy rains is also possible. Localized amounts of 50 mm possible with this storm... Storms are generally isolated, some look supercellular, at this point, but we should continue to see storms forming into more of a line this evening as it pushes east into the RRV. Still looks like a close call for Winnipeg because there is always that possibility that things could split.

  4. Not looking so promising for the Red River Valley at the moment. Unless more storms fire along the front before it reaches the RRV, looks like the splitting scenario would come true with little to nothing in the Winnipeg area tonight. (Not very surprising considering this has been the big story of the last 3 years). A wait and see situation right now.

    1. Although there's next to nothing showing on radar, there is actually some lightning to the west visible from my place in northwest Winnipeg right now.

    2. Apparently can see the lightning from the south Perimeter. I MIGHT go and check out the lightning to the north soon just for the heck of it.. I mean it's better than being stuck in this storm deadzone we call Winnipeg.

    3. It's a pretty decent light show. Like you said, better than nothing and I was expecting nothing. Is it going to move on down here though? It's sort of to the northwest of here; I suspect it's too far north but I don't know which way the storms are going exactly.

    4. Unless something surprising occurs, I don't think we'll get much, if anything, tonight in Winnipeg. Those storms in the Interlake are moving mostly ESE.

  5. Didn't get to go out to check the lightning sadly. Hopefully you got see quite a show from your place Evan.

Still another chance for a storm tomorrow... but once again optimism for me is at a minimum because even the good setups fail these days.

I don't know how many records we have to break this year when it comes to the lack of storm activity this year... There is one more... IF we didn't get a storm for the rest of the year, this year's season would have the second earliest ending on record, with the last storm on August 18. We'll see..

  6. Well, I expect E.C. to drop the severe thunderstorm watch for us as it's pretty clear nothing's gonna happen here tonight as per usual.
I certainly don't expect tomorrow to be different than today so don't count on storms here tomorrow either.

  7. A tiny baby thunderstorm skirted south Perimeter early this morning... Only got a few raindrops at my place so another miss.. but at least I saw some cloud-to-ground lightning and heard thunder.

    1. I got hit by that little storm, at my place in La salle, some cloud to groud lighting and a short yet sweet downpour.

    2. Thanks for the report :)

Sadly I was cooped up inside working all day. I see the airport reported storms earlier, how was it?

  8. Storms of course missed Winnipeg for the most part again today, so only got 1.9 mm of rain at my place... bringing the August total to a measly 25.6 mm. Wellll below the 1981-2010 normal of 79 mm at the airport.
Just goes to show how important thunderstorms are in bringing us our precipitation. Without thunderstorms we're missing a large chunk of normal rainfall.

  10. It's cold enough for a lake-effect streamer off Lake Winnipeg this morning.. Nothing heavy, looks like it's probably just a band of drizzle or light showers.
