The warmer temperatures are finally coming true with what looks like the end of the frigid winter weather. After a low of -24.2°C this morning, we start the warmup with rising temperatures tonight. Temperatures will likely exceed the freezing mark tomorrow with highs between 2 and 6°C in the Red River Valley, warmest near the escarpment. It wont be very sunny in the afternoon however.
Temperatures don't fall much tomorrow night, falling barely below zero. Another above zero day follows. At this point, a cool down that was anticipated for Tuesday and Wednesday looks less significant than before (haven't heard that happen in a long time!), with highs likely near to just below zero. Warmer temperatures return Thursday.
At this point, and I am amazed to say this, no extended periods of well below normal temperatures is in the foreseeable future with generally near normal to slightly above normal temperatures expected on most days in the next couple weeks.
So it now looks like we won't get any precipitation monday, right?
ReplyDeleteNo, models gave up on that system a while ago. There may be a few flurries, but no significant accumulations anticipated at this point.
DeleteJJ, although gradual, could this very well be the beginning of the annual spring melt over the next few days?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Anon
Hard to say because as you say it will be quite gradual. Although it will be milder, we're not talking about extreme warmth by any means. In addition, we can still get snowstorms in late March and early April as well which can reverse the progress we have made in mid March.
DeleteJj was this the day two years ago they predicted an overnight low of +19?memory reminds me that march night went down to + 16.
ReplyDeleteThe day you are thinking of was March 19, 2012. Morning low was 17°C........... High of 23.7°C with a humidex of 28... Heavy thunderstorms in the evening...... Hard to believe that even happened....
DeleteHourly data for that day... just for the memories!

That extreme warmth in March 2012 started March 10.
Yeah, that's very true JJ. But at least it seems like we won't be repeating last year, hopefully we won't that is.

It amazes me. How can we have at least 40 cms of snow for 200 kms in every direction at a temperature of at least -18. and can look forward to 3 or 4 days of + weather.
ReplyDeleteWill it be warm enough to melt?
The escarpment is really working its magic this morning with that westerly breeze. Already up to 3°C in McCreary, Morden, 2°C in Portage and 2°C in Carman. We should also see our temperatures reach above zero here in Winnipeg today. I'm hoping for at least 2°C.
ReplyDeleteWell, our temps have actually gone the other way this morning. It was actually a few degrees warmer earlier this morning then now. Not so sure about temps above freezing today.
ReplyDeleteActually, the airport temperature is a bit of an anomaly in Winnipeg this morning. Up to 0°C in Charleswood, -1°C at The Forks and -2°C in St Vital. The snow covered fields outside the city will be having more trouble getting warmer over the next few days compared to the warmer city. In fact, Winnipeg airport is the coldest area in the RRV this morning, other than Woodlands which is a little cooler.
DeleteVery true, JJ. Actually as you mentioned that, the Airport temperature has moved up to - 3 C with the 11 AM update. Still behind the other reporting stations in the RRV but catching up a little.
ReplyDeleteYeah, airport really struggling today. Above zero basically everywhere else, including +3°C here in south end.
DeleteAlso noticed that the Portage La Prairie Southport Airport temperature has also been dropping in the last couple of hours. Down to - 3 C with that northwest wind off the frozen Lake Manitoba. Don't think YWG Airport will make it above zero today.
ReplyDeleteHigh of -0.6°C at Winnipeg airport today, but 1.0°C at The Forks and 1.9°C in Charleswood. All the way up to 3°C at my place in south end however.
ReplyDeleteA lot warmer east of here. Was out at Falcon Lake and had +6c showing. Wearing t-shirts when shoveling snow! Is the cool pool Red River valley effect playing out here?
ReplyDeleteVery warm start to the day along the escarpment again with that westerly wind. All the way up to 6°C in McCreary, 3°C in Morden and 1 in Portage this morning, but well below zero elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteWe SHOULD get above zero in Winnipeg today. If somehow we escaped it, then there's a very good chance we will on Thursday after a cool down tomorrow and Wednesday. Will be a cold start on Wednesday however, likely dipping close to -20°C. Unfortunately, our future looks less warm than it did a couple days ago, with hints that a more colder pattern may return next week... Not the type and persistence of cold that we have seen of late however. The optimism in this post was a little premature nonetheless I'm sorry to say. Our turn for a warmer pattern will come eventually, just not yet!
