Snow And Cold

It is snowing quite steadily in parts of the city today as well as to our south. Amounts will vary within Winnipeg since the city is right on the line between the heavier snow to the south and lighter snow to the north. The south end will likely have about 5 to 8 cm by the afternoon while northern parts will likely only see 2 to 5 cm. Higher amounts of 10 cm will have fallen south of the city with possibly as high as 15 cm near the US Border by this evening.

Behind this things will be quite cold for a few days with nighttime lows in the -20's and highs in the low to mid minus teens. Brr! No major warmup to be seen in the near-future. A brief warmup to the low minus single digits with chances for snow around Wednesday next week, but it is expected to be quite brief.

  1. 5.5 cm at my place as of 2:15 PM. Still some light snow but generally things are winding down and ending.
The south end was easily hardest hit in the city as the heaviest bands remained in that part. Only about 1-2 cm reported at the north Perimeter with 2-3 cm in the Downtown area.

  2. A cold one out there this morning. Keep in mind however that the airport temperature of -27°C is not representative of the city. That's at least 4 to 5 degrees colder than most stations in the city.

-32°C in Saskatoon with a wind chill of -40 this morning! Ouch!

  3. Light snow has begun and will continue for the late afternoon and early evening hours. Not expecting much accumulation with max 1 cm.

  4. Bands of light snow keep reforming over the city, so looks like we may be getting flurries for the whole evening for the most part. Already about a cm at my place, so 2 cm total locally possible.

  5. About 2 cm total at my place. Looks like the snow is pretty much over, other than a couple flurries here and there.

  6. Snow will move in tonight into early morning tomorrow and taper to flurries sometime in the morning. 3 to 5 cm likely which will make the morning commute a little extra slippery. More light snow will be possible tomorrow night and Thursday, with lighter accumulations.

  7. A little note about my statistics page:
I've noticed Environment Canada has altered a bit of the Winnipeg airport data, particularly in the 80's and 90's (haven't checked other years yet). I will have to change some of the data on my statistics page to reflect these changes, sometime in the next month (it's a really busy month for me). For example, in the warmest years page, 1987 is the warmest year, but EC has changed the average mean from 5.5°C (what shows on my statistics page) to 5.4°C.

  8. Snowed quite steadily through the overnight and so far this morning with the steady snow ending within the next 30 minutes and then a gradual ending of light snow. There may be a few flurries here and there through the day, but not much additional accumulation. Will be going outside when the snow begins to taper to get measurements, but so far 6.4 cm in Charleswood and 5.5 cm in St. Boniface reported.

  9. 6.5 cm at my place as of 9:15 AM. Depth in the yard up to about 21 cm with 27 cm in the deepest drift (max depth). Have to use the metre stick soon!

  10. Wow again light snow keeps reforming behind the band, so looks like another hour or two of light snow, another half a cm perhaps.

  11. 6.4 cm in Steinbach reported, along with another report of 6.5 cm in south Winnipeg so general amounts in the Winnipeg area appears to be quite uniform around 6-7 cm for this system so far.

  12. Grand total 7.8 cm at my place, snow depth now 22 cm with a max of 29 cm in the deepest spot.

Potential is there for more snow this next weekend, but there is great uncertainty right now as the majority of models right now point towards a miss. GEM however gives close to 10 cm (which is an outlier at this point). Stay tuned..

  13. Turning out to be a snowier afternoon today than anticipated yesterday. What looked like a few flurries yesterday now looks like a few cm. So expect snow through the afternoon today in the city and Red River Valley, with 2 to 4 cm, mainly in southern sections of the city and south of the city.

  14. Already 2 cm here in south end..

  15. Bulk of the snow has pushed away and we'll be left with light snow for another hour or so, maybe another half a cm at most (bearing no redevelopment at the back of the band). 3.3 cm at my place so far.
