Ups and Downs in May
Another May, another May finishing close to or colder than normal. May 2015 finished 0.4°C below normal, marking the 6th colder than normal May in the last 8 years. We have not had a May that was at least 1.0°C above normal since 1991! However, 8 Mays finished over 1.0°C below normal in the same period.
There certainly was not a lack of summer-like warmth in May however. 8 days exceeded 25°C. Brief bursts of summer-like warmth were interrupted by significant cool downs in between.
The strongest storm of the month was an intense Colorado Low on the May Long Weekend. 40+ mm of rain fell along with winds gusts to 90 km/h. Snow even fell on Victoria Day, the latest occurrence of snow since 2002. Previously, snow had only fallen on May 18 4 times since 1872. Additionally, a rainfall record was also broken May 17 with 31.3 mm of rain. This broke the old record of 22.9 mm in 1903.

It looks like Saturday could be an interesting day. This season's first real severe weather threat could be in the works with all modes of severe weather possible. CAPE looks to be 1500-2000 J/kg with shear around 30 to 40 kt. Moisture is still the unknown but it could very well be a very warm to hot and muggy day. Although this might a tad overdone at the very least be aware that severe weather will be possible Saturday afternoon and evening.
ReplyDeleteWell, yesterday was bust as usual. Storms split around Winnipeg other than a brief thunderstorm over downtown around 5 PM. However not much in the way of severe storms. The storms showed signs of severe but then quickly collapsed. That same cold front produced severe storms in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Southwest MB but not further east in the RRV and SE MB...go figure. Not surprised, however.
ReplyDeleteWhat's Friday and the weekend looking like? Will it be a 3rd weekend in a row where we've had some form of rain/ showers?
ReplyDeleteMy apologies for the lack of updates. With work, travel and school I just have not had the time. A Weather Moment will be your go-to for weather updates from now on.
ReplyDeleteMonthly summaries will continue as usual, but they may just be a little shorter. Hoping to have June's by Thursday or Friday.
ReplyDeleteStill have not reached 30°C at Winnipeg airport this year! This will mark the 26th time since 1872 that we had to wait until July or later to get our first 30°C. Latest was 2008 when amazingly we didn't hit 30°C until August 16. Second latest is July 24 in 1882 and 1927. 1981-2010 normal is June 2.
