Warm, and stormy?

It will be a hot one today with highs around 31°C in the Winnipeg area. It will be a little humid to start, however humidity levels will gradually decrease in the afternoon hours as a gusty west wind develops. There will be a slight chance of a shower late morning, however the best chance for storms and showers will be to the southeast near Sprague and the Whiteshell. As for this afternoon, it will begin sunny, then clouds will begin to increase late afternoon with another small chance of showers late afternoon and early evening. There will be a small chance of a severe storm near the Ontario border, however the best chance for severe storms will be in northwestern Ontario.

It will be a couple degrees cooler tomorrow behind the trough today. Highs will be in the 27-28°C range, humidity will be low and winds will be light making for a perfect summer's day.

Things become for turbulent - and uncertain - for mid-week. A strong low is expected to move across the Prairies, which could spark off some strong storms Tuesday in Saskatchewan and Wednesday for Manitoba. However, timing is uncertain so those dates could change. Stay tuned for updates on this event.

It looks like we'll cool down behind the low, but the cool down will be brief. Indications are that we will return to hot weather by the weekend into next week.

  1. Looks like we might even get warmer than expected. Already 31.3°C as of 1 PM, so 32 or 33°C will certainly be possible today for the city. Humidity seems to be taking a little longer to clear out as well, so we'll see humidex values in the high thirties approaching 40 for an hour or two this afternoon before things get drier later in the afternoon and especially by evening.

  4. There is still no sign of an end to this hot weather. There will be a brief break in the heat this Thursday, but it will only drop to the mid twenties. It's looking like a hot weekend and week ahead next week so far.

Today will warm, with highs near 27 or 28°C. Winds will be light, however the light northerly breeze will be enough to bring some smoke from northern Manitoba today. You may notice haze get thicker and thicker throughout the day. You can already see some haze on the horizon this morning.

  5. It will be warm today near 29 or 30°C, and humidity will be low with humidex values around 33 or 34 at peak this afternoon. It will be a cloudier day, especially this afternoon. It will be a cloudy evening, and there will be a chance of showers and storms late evenin and overnight tonight.

This evening, severe storms will be possible in western and southwestern Manitoba as storms move in from Saskatchewan. Today may bring more tornadoes in Saskatchewan, however it will depend on how much clearing can take place. Main threat on our side of the border is large hail, damaging winds, flooding rains, and an isolated tornado early evening is possible, but unlikely.

The next few days are very messy, and hard to predict. The best way to say it is that there is a chance for showers and storms from this evening all the way to Thursday evening. The best chances for precipitation in Winnipeg will be overnight tonight, tomorrow late afternoon and evening, and Thursday morning.

I will keep you all up to date on the latest.

  6. Tomorrow will be cooler than today, with highs in the mid twenties, but it will still feel very warm due to high humidity as dewpoints rise to near 20°C.

Thursday will be much cooler, with highs only around 21°C, a good 5 degrees below normal.

  7. There is a risk of thunderstorms, and some may be severe, today. Check the thunder forecast for details.

  8. Risk for storms is diminishing for Winnipeg. Winds have become westerly, and dewpoints are dropping as front passes. Looks like another non-event, unless something randomly pops out of nowhere. What a depressing streak of summers from a rainfall perspective.

  10. Yikes, the airport got down to about 8°C this morning! Looks like we wont be able to brag about not getting below 10°C this month anymore! :P

Technically we can, since every station I see inside the city stayed near 10 or 11°C. Got down to 10.1°C at my place.

It will warm up nicely in to the mid twenties today, then the heat really starts up tomorrow and beyond.

  11. Looking at the forecast for the rest of July, this July certainly has potential to be in the top 5, and potentially even the second or third warmest on record since 1872. Average mean as of yesterday is 22.0°C. As of now, the second warmest July is an average mean of 22.4°C, and with lows in the mid to high teens and highs near 30 over the next few days, we may get close to that record. Stay tuned.. I will have the answers and facts July 31 or August 1.
