WARM For Once! Enjoy It While It Lasts! (Hint Hint)

A nice west/southwest flow aloft over the next couple days will bring in some long-awaited warmth to southern Manitoba. Temperatures are expected to reach the high teens today and low to mid 20's on Monday and Tuesday. Plenty of sunshine will accompany these warm temperatures. Winds today and Monday will be light. On Tuesday, a stronger south/southwest wind will setup ahead of an approaching cold front with sustained winds of 20 to 30 km/h expected.

Enjoy the warmth while we have it because that approaching cold front will bring in much cooler weather on Wednesday. A few isolated thunderstorms cannot be ruled out with this front on Tuesday, however a significant lack of shear and moisture will likely prevent a widespread storm event.

Behind the front on Wednesday, winds will be quite brisk out of the north and daytime highs will likely only reach the low teens for the RRV and southeastern Manitoba.

Another cold front is expected late week which will bring even colder weather for part of next weekend. As of now, storm threat still looks low with that secondary front.

  1. High of 17.8°C at my place in south St Vital this afternoon.

Very good chance at hitting our first 20°C of the year tomorrow as temperatures at 850 mb are expected to be a good 5 or so degrees warmer than today. That could translate to highs around 22°C or 23°C in Winnipeg. Light winds and plentiful sunshine once again; lovely spring weather.

  2. Could even get up to 24 or 25°C based on how quickly things are warming up so far today.

  3. Going to be lots of records broken in Alberta today. Edmonton at 29.4°C as of 10 minutes ago.. already over a degree warmer than the previous record of 28.3°C.

Not doing too shabby here neither! Really warmed up quickly today.. all the way up to 25°C at the airport. 25.0°C the high so far at my place. Even a few 26's in some parts of the city.

  4. Old record here in Winnipeg today is 32.1°C in 1992, so we're no where near records today. In fact, record highs here are in the 30's from now all the way until mid September.

  5. Unofficial high of 31.3°C at Edmonton int'l airport today. That's the 4th earliest occurence of 30°C on record for that city and second hottest temperature for so early in the year. Records go back to 1880. Pretty impressive...

  6. That cut-off low I had mentioned about in the post before this one is still spinning over the southeast US right now... The low has brought Georgia flooding rains in the last few days, an area that was in extreme drought just a couple months ago! Interesting article by Jeff Master's on this subject:

  7. Looks like Friday's rain will fall midday (between late morning and early afternoon or so) instead of later in the day... That would keep our temperatures lower on Friday with highs only in the low teens. Thunder looks unlikely, but a few isolated rumbles are not out of the question, especially in southwestern Manitoba. Rain could be heavy at times with a quick 2-5 mm possible.

Winds will really increase behind the front on Friday afternoon out of the north/northwest with gusts to 60 km/h likely.

Looks very chilly on Saturday with highs only in the mid to high single digits! However, the cool down will be brief. Warm up is expected to begin next week, and it could possible even be warmer than it was earlier this week. Highs in the high 20's and approaching 30°C look likely Monday and Tuesday accross southern Manitoba.

All in all, a roller coaster ride over the next week!

  8. Looks like there's a good chance we'll dip below zero tonight. Maybe not in downtown, but the suburbs and rural areas likely will, with lows between 0 and -3°C expected. May get another below zero night or two this weekend... then let's hope we don't see anymore!

  9. Here's a graph of daily high and low temperatures so far this year at my place in south St Vital...

Notice the roller coaster ride we've been on the last couple weeks! We'll reach the bottom of the roller coaster this Saturday and then rise all the way back up again on Monday.

  10. Tuesday looks a little interesting right now. It could be our first good shot at some thunderstorms. However, that's assuming the amount of moisture the GFS brings in is correct. Will keep an eye on the potential. It will be a very warm day in the mid twenties at least.

  11. However, there's a large discrepancy between the GFS and the ECMWF right now, so it's still not a guarantee.

  12. GFS closer to ECMWF now so storm potential not as high Tuesday than previously seen... I'll wait a few more days before updating on it.
