Yesterday's Storms; Possible Tornado

Some of the areas which needed rain finally got it yesterday.

Storm near Carman at 7:55 pm
First off, a west to east line of storms early yesterday morning dumped copious amounts of rain to areas along the US border. The heaviest amounts hugged right along the border with as much as 80 mm in some localities.

Then in the afternoon and evening, a line of storms formed in southeastern Saskatchewan and pushed east-southeastward all across southern Manitoba. Damaging winds and torrential rains were the main stories. Lots of damage occured near Brandon and Shilo due to the strong winds.

Even a tornado may have touched down in the Sioux Valley First Nation west of Brandon. Some homes saw major damage. It has yet to be confirmed.

The storms pushed into the Red River Valley in the evening, bringing Winnipeg it's heaviest rainfall of the month. In only 15-20 minutes, 13-18 mm of rain fell over the city.

A funnel cloud was reported near Altona which had prompted a tornado warning for the area. The storm also had a nice shelf cloud; some fantastic pictures and a timelapse can be seen here.

There will be the chance for more storms in southwestern Manitoba today, especially southwest of Brandon. However, it wont be as bad as yesterday. These storms are associated with a cold front moving from the north which will flush out much of the humidity in southern Manitoba. The lower dewpoints along with mostly clear skies and light winds tonight will create a fairly chilly night tonight in the Red River Valley. An overnight low around 6 to 8°C is possible in Winnipeg, especially on the outskirts. Downtown will remain warmer. Cold air will remain tomorrow with a high around 19 or 20°C.

Warmer and more humid air moves in Sunday ahead of a low pressure system. Thunderstorms, some potentially severe, are expected in southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba late in the day. This could bring more rain and possibly some thunderstorm activity to Winnipeg in the overnight hours.

  1. Front must have passed through the city now because dewpoints have plummeted from 16°C to 10°C in the last hour. Dewpoint now 8°C in Charleswood.

  2. Issued a slight risk for severe storms around Melita for the rest of today. Hail and wind main concerns.
Although it may not seem like it in Winnipeg, it's been quite active this month in southern Manitoba. I've issued 6 slight risks and 3 moderate risks of severe storms so far this month. So far, 12 days out of 19 have had severe thunderstorm warnings in southern Manitoba.
