Records Possible Today

A wind warning has been issued for Winnipeg and the Red River Valley for later this morning into part of this afternoon. Very strong south winds are expected. They may be sustained up to 60 km/h at times with gusts as high as 80-90 km/h. This will create some blowing dust at times, especially outside city limits where topsoil on fields may be blown around and reduce visibility locally. When out and about, please keep in mind that the fire risk is very high.

It will also be very warm today - possibly record breaking in fact. Highs around 22-25°C are expected. The old record for Winnipeg is 24.1°C in 2006. It will be a close call... There is also the potential of breaking a record high minimum. The minimum of 11.6°C this morning was above the old record high minimum of 10.4°C in 2006 for today. Whether or not we break the record will depend on how quickly we cool this evening, but I think we've got a very good chance of breaking it. Daily lows above 10°C are very rare for this early in the season, having only occurred on this date or earlier 4 times since 1872 (March 19, 2012; April 14, 2010; April 15, 1931 and April 15, 2006).

Enjoy the warmth while it lasts... While it will remain mild for the remainder of the week, models have consistently hinted at a more significant cool down for next week.

  1. The feeling here is, that 24C could very well be a stretch today. We'll see what happens. That wind is sure nasty though today.

  2. Looks like a blowing dust event is about to unfold here in the next couple of hours or less. Not a surprise given the strong winds and the very dry surface. I would say we probably are in a bit of a drought. It has been significantly drier than normal for the past 7 months or so now.

  3. That blowing dust event that's unfolding would certainly be enough to prevent us from getting to 24C depending how long it lasts.

  4. Actually the blowing dust looks rather insignificant at this point as we speak. YWG at 20C as of noon and we haven't reached peak heating time so we'll see how warm we can get today.

  5. High of 22.0°C at the airport as of 1 pm. Record still within reach, but yeah, it'll be a close call today.

    1. High 23.3°C as of 2 pm, so close!

    2. High 24.2°C as of 3 pm, officially breaking the old record of 24.1°C in 2006. I think we will break the high minimum as well for today so definitely turned into quite the event today.

    3. 24.8°C is the high up to 6 pm, possibly the official high for the day.

Some areas have exceeded 25°C today, especially to our west in the Gladstone, Portage and Carman areas. Some local 25's elsewhere. Some areas got close to 26°C... will post some highs tomorrow morning.

  6. Cloud of smoke just entering Winnipeg now with rapidly deteriorating skies. Sky completely white/grey in south end at this time. Awful day out there despite the warm conditions.

  7. Are we still seeing rain tonight?? I just noticed EC took the chance of rain away from there forecast!

    1. Don't think we'll see any rain tonight. The threat wasn't very high to begin with.

Cold front quickly approaching from the northwest this evening. Can even see it on radar. Going to be a close call for a record high minimum.

    2. I was hoping to get some rain but we have to wait till possibly Sunday for rain. It's too dry out!

  8. Some highs yesterday:
    Gladstone 25.7°C
    Altona, Carman, St Adolphe 25.3°C
    Portage 25.2°C
    Winnipeg The Forks 24.9°C
    Winnipeg airport 24.8°C

Temperatures plummeted very rapidly behind the front just after midnight. We did not break the high minimum record as a result with a low of 7.4°C. Unfortunately, the day for the Environment Canada goes from 1 am to 1 am, so that would explain why the low was so low.

  9. Remaining warm until Saturday, then things really take a nosedive for next week... One last 20°C possible on Saturday.

Stronger system possible for Sunday-Monday with rain and even snow possible. Then we cool down with highs only in the single digits next week. Looks like this cool down will be more prolonged than previous cool downs of late.

  10. Yeah next week does look like a an ugly week temp wise. However it does look like it will warmup back into the teens again by the end of the week next week or the weekend.

  11. One last warm day today so enjoy it while it lasts! Should reach into the 18-21°C range. I think hitting 20°C will be a close call and not a guarantee.

System for Sunday-Monday... From what I can see quickly, looks like rain tomorrow. If precipitation is still falling, it will change to snow tomorrow night. Tough forecast right now with some disagreement in models. Notice the Canadian model is much more aggressive for the Winnipeg area than the American models. The European is somewhat in between. Will provide an update and more details tomorrow morning once my exams are done!

  12. Hope you enjoyed the last warm day today. It all goes downhill from here. Unfortunately this will not be a brief cooldown. This looks like a prolonged spell of below normal temps likely going into May. Just can't shakeoff these below normal spells around here.

Note that there may be opportunities to break record lows for some this coming week as well as overnight lows plummet well into the minuses especially midweek.

  13. Already 6.6 mm here in South St Vital today... Update coming soon.

  14. Looks like generally 7-10 mm of rain in Winnipeg as of 10 am. We'll see some light rain continue for most of the day with an additional 4-8 mm likely. The persistent northwesterlies will also be returning today with strong northwest winds of 30 to 40 km/h this afternoon.

Any precipitation still falling should begin to mix in with snow this evening as temperatures drop. Periods of snow at times tonight with 1-4 cm likely. Miserable day tomorrow with strong northwest winds of 40 km/h, some light snow and showers at times and cold temperatures with highs only reaching mid single digits.

Sun returns on Tuesday but the persistent northwesterlies continue to overstay their welcome. It will be a chillier start below zero and a high in the high single digits. The remainder of the work week looks cold with lows well into the minus single digits and highs in the mid to high single digits. I personally don't think we're talking about record cold though. Record lows are still in the minus teens.

Still early, but looks like slight moderation by next weekend.

  15. Thundercast will open May 1... A couple minor changes...
    - The isolated severe risk will be replaced by a marginal severe risk shaded area (for severe risks that are very isolated and the chance is not very significant)
    - Day 3 eliminated so it will only be a 2-day forecast
    - Forecast area diminished in size slightly but I've made sure to include southern Manitoba's largest cities.

  16. A couple cm of snow likely today with periods of light snow through most of the day...

Unfortunately, looks like the cloud will hang around a little longer tomorrow morning with hopefully (crossing fingers) some clearing by midday.

    1. On the other hand, the end of the cold spell is in sight. A decent warmup continues to look possible next week and to start May... Of course, this is still pretty far, so let's just hope this doesn't change.

  17. My goodness, actually dropped all the way down to -11.4°C at the airport overnight. Just shy of the record of -12.8°C in 1909. Much warmer in city limits, only down to -7°C or -8°C.

    1. Significant warmup continues to look possible next week. Stil really early, but temperatures in the 20's look possible to end April. GFS even has temperatures creeping into the high 20's so definitely will be interesting to see what happens. Too early to say how long the warmth will last.

  18. We'll see how it goes but I think that 16°C for today from EC is a little overdone. Even the RAP which sometimes tends to be on the high side is not that high for today. I'm thinking 12-14°C.
