Warming Up

We just have to get through one more miserable day. It will be mainly cloudy with highs only around 0°C in Winnipeg today. Winds will be lighter than it was on the weekend, but it will still be a little breezy from the north. A few snowflakes may be seen at times again as well.

Skies will begin to clear out this evening, giving way to a few days of warmth and sunshine ahead. Although, we will also have to get through one more cold night tonight. The high pressure centre will move through southern Manitoba tonight. As a result, light winds and clear skies will allow temperatures to drop between -10°C and -15°C. BRR!

With plenty of sunshine and light winds tomorrow, things will rebound quickly to around 7 or 8°C.

It will get even warmer Thursday, with temperatures getting back to what we have become accustomed to (or spoiled with!). Expect highs around 15°C, but there will be a small price to pay. Winds will also be picking up from the southeast, with sustained winds around 30, and gusts up to 50 km/h possible. Most of Thursday will feature crystal clear skies, although cloud will begin to increase later in the afternoon, and especially by evening. That's where we have to talk about a potential storm Thursday night through to early Saturday. It's a little far off right now, but it could be a good rain maker, and possibly a few rumbles of thunder. Stay tuned for updates.

  1. BRRR! -11°C to start the day. Old record low is -22.8°C, so it's nowhere near a record in case you wondered, because this is almost 10 degrees below normal. 7 or 8°C this afternoon, closer to 15 or 16°C tomorrow. 5-10 mm possible Friday, with heaviest rain Friday morning.

  2. I wouldn't get too excited about ec's forecast of 19C an sunny for Saturday. That model seems to be the only one that is showing a Saturday like that. Most show us entering into a northerly flow behind that system Friday, leaving us with much cooler temperatures than that 19C. I'd be leaning to closer to 10°C for Saturday myself with more cloud than sun. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I believe it would be better to be honest! :P

  3. Looking quite wet tomorrow for all of southern Manitoba. A general 5 to 15 mm, with locally higher amounts in heavier bands and with thunderstorms.

Some thunderstorms will be possible west of the city this afternoon and evening. That may push close to the city in the later evening and overnight, but we may just get some showers without thunder. Will update during the day.

  4. Band of showers and embedded thunder moving through extreme southwest Manitoba around Melita as of late this afternoon. These showers are slow moving thanks to low shear. We may get some showers as that line approaches the city overnight, but I don't expect us to see much in terms of thunderstorm activity since there is not much instability and shear is so small.

Still looking very damp tomorrow with widespread showers. Again, a few embedded rumbles will be possible, but I don't think we'll see too much in terms of thunderstorms.

If you're looking for thunderstorms, south of the border will be the place to be for the next couple days. Major outbreaks of severe storms and tornadoes look possible with Saturday potentially being an historical outbreak. Will have to watch that area closely over the next few days.

Will try to make a new post this evening, but I wont until I get some projects finished for tomorrow.
