Rainfall Tally

Torrents of rainfall came down on some communities of southern Manitoba from Thursday to Sunday. Winnipeg had its fair share of flooding rains back on Thursday when as much as 70 mm fell over parts of the southwest end. Meanwhile, only minimal amounts fell in other parts of the city.

In southwestern Manitoba, it was two large areas of thunderstorms which dumped copious amounts of rainfall. Firstly, early in the morning Saturday, then again early in the morning on Sunday. 100+ mm of rain fell locally with a few communities issuing states of emergency due to flooding. Frequent lightning was also seen making for quite a spectacle. 40+ mm of rain in Brandon on Saturday morning severely flooded some streets. Overland flooding is a major concern across much of southwestern Manitoba as well as localized sections of the RRV.

A slow moving line of thunderstorms close to the escarpment on Saturday also dumped unimaginable rainfall amounts. Radar estimates point at as much as 150 + mm in just a few hours northwest of Portage. That doesn't even include the rain that fell on Sunday.

Here's a map summary of rainfall amounts between Thursday and Sunday (courtesy of Manitoba Agriculture, Environment Canada and Cocorahs):

    1. I'll have to make some more often, I hadn't realised there was much interest. I'll try to think of one tomorrow.

    2. Maybe you could do a poll on when Winnipeg will get its first MCS of the year if it ever gets one.

    3. If we don't hit 30°C tomorrow, a poll on when we hit our first 30°C will be made. Otherwise I'll have to do something else. Thanks for the suggestion.

  3. I'm thinking 30°C is almost a certainty today. At 9 am, were already 4°C warmer than we were yesterday at this time. If we manage to maintain this sunshine, 31°C may be possible.

  4. 30.6°C here in south St Vital as of 1:30 pm.

Dewpoints of 20°C to 21°C creeping into southwestern Manitoba.. Opressive humidity today

Looks like we'll have to wait for storms tonight in Winnipeg, today's chance is quite low.

  5. I've issued a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms for parts of southwestern Manitoba for later on today. This is especially for the potential of large hail and flooding rains. We'll see later on if I made the right choice of issuing it.
Since 2012, I have issued moderate risks on:
    June 9, 2012
    July 29, 2012
    July 31, 2012

July 31, 2012 was the only bust of those three. High risks have yet to be issued.

Note that I'm a little less strict than the SPC for issuing these risks. So a moderate risk that I issue is not equivalent to a moderate risk by the SPC.

    1. 31.9°C here in south St Vital so far.

Severe thunderstorms firing up just south of the border and moving into southwestern Manitoba shortly. Tornado warning issued near Minot. Will be something to watch in the next several hours. Also seeing some cells firing on our side of the border.

    2. Cell near Minot is just exploding right now on visible satellite. Check out this visible satellite image showing how much it's grown in 30 minutes (3:45 pm to 4:15 pm)

  7. That’s a big contrast between the two. Also check out the foxwarren radar at 4:40, the cell near Carlyle has 200 MM/HR!

  11. That line of storms is really beginning to organise itself in southwestern Manitoba and North Dakota. It might weaken before reaching Winnipeg, but be prepared for a good storm sometime between 10 pm and 1 am in the city. Will be interesting to see what comes of it.

  12. Boundary going through the city this hour from the north. Not exactly sure what it is.. lake breeze? retreating warm front? Either way, winds have switched to the NE instead of SE. This boundary could potentially initiate some storms this evening... but we'll see.

  13. Incredible! Reston hit with 104.4 mm of rain from this evening's thunderstorms according to Manitoba Agriculture. That means this month's rainfall total now approaches 300 mm!!

  14. Well how was that for a midnight MCS? Been a while since we've had something like this!
Torrential here in south St Vital, with minor flooding on my street. 20.1 mm as of 12:10 am.

  15. Back to update forecasts, sorry for the inconvenience. Will also have a new poll up late afternoon.

  16. There will be a risk for thunderstorms in Winnipeg late this afternoon and early/mid evening. An isolated severe storm is possible.. but not as intense as last night.

  17. Thanks so much for the info on the wilting zucchini JJ. Following the advice on both links and some of my own gardening knowledge I managed to revive them. :)
