Miserable conditions for the next few days... Cloudy skies will dominate through to Thursday with chance of some drizzle and light showers or flurries each day. Best chance will be today. Not expecting much accumulation, if any. Very chilly compared to what we're used to however, with highs in the low single digits. It will also be quite windy out of the north-northwest today and Thursday. Lighter winds tomorrow.
For Halloween, though it will be quite sunny, it will also be quite chilly. Only expecting highs in the low single digits after a morning low in the mid minus single digits. For the evening trick-or-treaters, a moderate southerly breeze will make it feel a little colder. Temperatures should be close to the freezing mark.
So far, it looks like the beginning of November should be warmer than normal overall. Models hint at a more significant system early next week, but it's too early for any specific details.
Looks like we'll see a few waves of light snow throughout the day today. Not expecting any sticking accumulation (may accumulate a bit briefly, then melt) thankfully.
ReplyDeleteA trace of snow (no accumulation) in Charleswood. My first official measurement of the season! Observations for Charleswood 2 climate station will start today..
ReplyDeleteNot bad! 1981-2010 normal first trace cm+ is October 9. Although, I did see some flakes here in South St Vital during the first week of this month.
DeleteBy the way, it appears likely this October will finish as the 3rd driest October on record since 1872 with just under 5 mm of precipitation at the airport.
ReplyDeleteLooks like 2 big systems will affect may affect us in the next week or so. The first one looks to be Sunday/Monday with mainly a rain event but the 2nd one for later next week around the 7th or so, is very interesting. That system may bring us the season's first accumulating snow, however GFS and Euro were trending further north and warmer withThursday's runs so let's hope that continues to be the case.
ReplyDeleteA dreadful low of -11.9°C at the airport this morning, coldest October night since 2002.
ReplyDeleteFor the trick-or-treaters tonight, it will definitely be chilly with temperatures likely around or just below zero. Winds will be southerly, but not terribly strong. They don't really strengthen much until tomorrow when they could gust up to 50 km/h.
Yeah, anon, I'm really not liking how things are looking by mid-month right now. Models are hinting at some very cold air possibly working its way down into the Prairies. With that, looks like we may enter into a bit more active pattern with our first accumulating snows of the season possible. Too early to give many details and guarantees on snowfall so for now, let's just enjoy the warmer temperatures this weekend.
yeah, I agree, second half of the month does not look very good. It seems like the cold pattern may return after a breaks of a few weeks. As for that big system later next week, I don't like the looks of that one. Let's just say, enjoy the snowfree ground while it lasts.
ReplyDeleteClearly still pretty uncertain this far out. GFS update this afternoon not as bad as this morning. However, more and more the signs of the beginning of winter are getting closer and closer... Which really isn't that unusual by November.
ReplyDeleteDespite this cooldown did we finish the month above the norm??
ReplyDeleteYeah, October will finish above normal. We'll likely finish with an average of 6.7°C, 1.6°C above the normal of 5.1°C. Brief October summary will be posted either this evening or tomorrow afternoon.
DeleteWill be posted this afternoon as I'll be busy this morning.
